Target size is not guessing quality

The quality slider is a means. The byte cap is the constraint. 2.0 ships a factory target-size plan and lets you hang the same control on any plan.

Target size
1.8 MB
200 KBcap
196 KB

Set a byte ceiling, then approach quality and resolution. Do not start by guessing 73.

What it approaches

Quality first, then metadata if needed, then resolution steps. GIF can drop bit depth. It stops and keeps the closest file instead of looping forever. You only need the rule: write the cap, then export.

PDFs can use a target too. See A PDF stays a PDF.

If both the original and the result miss the cap, the closer file stays. That differs slightly from plain revert-if-larger. See Revert when the result is larger.

Do not

  • Do not set 1 KB and demand poster sharpness. The long edge will collapse.
  • Do not skip the compare view. Type and edges still need a person.
  • Do not treat 200 KB as a guaranteed hit. It approaches. It does not promise.

Next: One master, many sizes.
