Compress PDFs and keep selectable text when you can

Image Optimizer can compress PDFs in the same queue as pictures. Compression uses Ghostscript on this computer. The output is still a PDF, not a rasterized page dump. Free quota is 300 per calendar month. One PDF counts as one.

What files fit?

• Illustrated PDFs that bounce off email size limits.
• Documents that must stay smaller but still allow selecting text and vectors.
• Scans or manuals packed with photos (those usually shrink more).

Lab sample: a photo-heavy PDF of about 11.5 MB went to about 1.49 MB on the ebook preset. Screen is smaller. That is a sample, not a promise for your file.

How to run it

1. Install Ghostscript on onboarding step 2, or later in Settings · Plugins (Homebrew-style install on macOS, download page on Windows). The app does not bundle Ghostscript.
2. Drop .pdf files on the main window. If the engine is missing, that row explains why. Image jobs continue.
3. Pick screen / ebook / printer / prepress in the plan. Default is ebook.
4. Turn on Target size if you need a byte budget.
5. Click Optimize. Encrypted PDFs fail. You cannot save pictures as PDF, watermark a PDF, or emit extra PDF page sizes.

If the file grows, the negative-opt guard keeps the original.

What not to use it for

• Converting JPEG / PNG into PDF.
• Exporting pages as images.
• Unlocking password-protected PDFs.
• Running portrait cutout or upscale on a PDF (those steps skip PDFs).
